MS SocietyCruise the CornfieldsFundraiser
Our office will be raising money for the MS Society for the next three months. We chose to raise money to support MS research and patients because family members of our staff have had MS. Also, we provide care for patients who are dealing with this and have seen how devastating it can be.

A goal has been set to raise at least $1,500 to go toward the MS Society. Any new patient who donates $50 or more to theDr. Krohse’s Cruise the Cornfields fundwill receive a complementary first visit (exam, any needed spinal X-rays, and table massage up to $300 value).
Additionally, we would love to have friends and patients of Compass Chiropractic join us on the Cruise the Cornfields ride on June 23-24. Contact Dr. Krohse if you’re interested in more info on joining our team.

Sandy recommends local Farmers’ Markets!

With an early spring and May approaching, it's farmers' market season. I never met a fruit and veggie stand I didn't like and I could munch on freshly popped kettle corn 24/7. In the next next few weeks, farmers' markets will be popping up all over Central Iowa and throughout the state. We are fortunate to have access to some of the very finest locally grown produce. The following is a list, as I know it, of local Des Moines area farmers' markets:
**Stop by and say hello at the Compass Chiropractic booth at the Waukee Farmers Market on Wednesdays and the Valley Junction Farmers Market every Thursday evening.
Peter recommendsJazzby Toni Morrison

For the month of May, I would have to recommend reading Jazz by Toni Morrison. Jazz is a fictional novel set in the mid to early twentieth century, and involves individual characters all being tied to the outcome of the story. I had to read this as a part of my Literature class I took this spring and was taught that a novel does not need a Freytags Pyramid to be an exciting novel. Freytags Pyramid is used to describe a novel, where a plot starts off with inciting actions, caps off with a climatic event, then ends with falling actions to an end. In Jazz, Toni Morrison uses a typical jazz composition to structure the book. In a jazz song you have a band with different instruments playing their solo, and telling their own story with their part. Similarly in this novel, you have characters introduced, telling you how they are involved with the story and then ending with all of them coming together. It is a quick and easy read, and if you like jazz music, then you are sure to enjoy this book and understand the underlying narrative of the story.
Dr. Krohse recommendsFitness Sports
Anyone who loves (or even likes) running in Iowa should really head to Fitness Sports, give Steve Bobenhouse a hug, and then buy some shoes. In my opinion, no other single person has done more for running in Iowa. Steve and Fitness Sports host the most comprehensive list of Iowa endurance events, organize races, and provide water stops for Saturday morning group training runs. Their attitude of “supporting the sport” is incredible. Steve also takes great pride in staffing his amazing store with experts! He keeps up to date with the running trends and carries the latest and greatest advances in running technology.Lately, I’ve been reminded of how important it is to shop local. I love being able to tell a patient who needs a pair of running or walking shoes to head over to Fitness Sports. I feel confident that the experts there will help them find the right shoes. However, if Central Iowans don’t actually buy the shoe from the experts, awesome companies like Fitness Sports will struggle. Please don’t let this happen. Support your local experts who have provided so many great opportunities for us to do what we love!

Tom Laughead andBike World
Cyclists all over the world know Des Moines as the capital of the “RAGBRAI state”. Des Moines has an amazing paved trail system and numerous bicycle-friendly restaurant/bars. No Central Iowan should be without a decent bike. When you need to pick out a bike or upgrade your current trusty steed, my recommended bike expert isTom Laugheadover at Bike World. Bike World has multiple stores, and their entire team has always provided stellar service. However, Tom can usually be found at the store on Douglas. This whole company is great and is also an excellent example of a store that supports the sport. For supporting RAGBRAI teams and providing bikes for theDream Team, Bike World deserves your support.

Railroad Tunnel Trail to Hoover Dam Run Review - Running Las Vegas
While in Las Vegas for some continuing education, I needed to get two runs in as a part of my training plan from Run Faster from 5k to Marathon. My first run took me to the west side of Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon. I stayed on the main 13 mile paid loop for the 8 mile out and back run and learned quickly that I was not doing enough hill work back in Des Moines. The run was shortly before sunset and was beautiful and very challenging. The first four miles were almost entirely uphill. The return down was a different type of stress as I tried to coast down without letting my body pound much.
By Sunday, I'd researched other best runs around Las Vegas and decided I should head to the visitor center west of the Hoover Dam. I hoped to run the Railroad Tunnels Trail but was concerned that it might be too rough to do an intense run on. In that case I figured I could just hop on the paved River Mountains Loop Trail and run up the west shore of Lake Mead. However, the Tunnel Trail was finely crushed gravel with just scattered golf ball sized rocks so was fine for my run. Different online reviews of the trail gave different lengths. I needed 10 miles total. I took off and enjoyed the flat trail and great scenery. Check the linkedRunkeeper logto see pictures along the trail. Ultimately, I made it across the Dam and enjoyed seeing the huge new bridge down river. I wound my way up the road to the east of the dam and was thrilled to find that I hit 5 miles right at the end of the road. It's more satisfying when runs have a sense of completion. The run back called for moderate intensity during the last 30 minutes and I enjoyed a tailwind that made it more rewarding to crank up the intensity.
I highly recommend a run on the Railroad Tunnels Trail and Hoover Dam on your next visit to Las Vegas!

Des Moines Zombie Burger Review
It's the "Deadest Place" in the East village!! And I love it!!!! When you go take your time... there is so much going on and the menu is worth a full read!! The humor and clever play on words keeps you entertained and makes choosing a sandwich a real decision! The "choices" are not in what goes on your sandwich, but what goes in your sandwich. There are 4 "meats" to choose from. The sandwiches themselves are each aptly named and full of surprises!! The buns are from George's talented bread bakers and they do not disappoint!! Not only do they have the menu set up from a different perspective the whole restaurant experience is fresh! You can either enter the left side and get your order to go/sit at a table/ or on the patio weather permitting or you can enter the right side and do the whole bar/ order from the table thing. Either way, the food is phenomenal and the service is stellar! Customer service is far from "dead& gone " in this place.
My personal favorite choices are the "double tap" Planet Terror with a fry basket of sweet potato fries(gotta have the dipping sauce too!) and a MUST HAVE Zombie Bride's Wedding Cake Shake!!!! It's like drinking wedding cake thru a straw!!!!! AMAZING!!!! There are so many items there that I want to try!! And we never get tired of the fun that is had by all everytime we go there! Thank you Des Moines for supporting our local talent in the culinary arts!! See.... Art can be Fun!!

Just wanted to drop you a line thanking you so much for last night's workshop. I incorporated the simple techniques into my run tonight and I ran faster than I ever have, had more energy at the end - never ended up feeling winded or tired and actually felt like I could have gone another couple of miles - and my knees didn't hurt and aren't hurting now at all! Thank you so much. I'm thrilled and looking forward to my long run this Saturday to see what a difference it makes there.

Sandy recommends Blue Ribbon Pet Salon
As an owner of three very loving and (slightly) spoiled dogs, ensuring their ongoing good health and grooming is important. My family has enjoyed a very happy, long-term relationship with Blue Ribbon Pet Salon, in Clive. The salon is professional, reliable and they treat our dogs like family. And just like humans, dogs can have spinal issues, too. My 9-year-old dog, Amber, has a herniated disc in her spine, and her groomer, Melinda, takes great care with her and gives her gentle, loving care. There's nothing quite like picking the dogs up when they look and smell fresh from a bath and grooming. Check out Blue Ribbon Pet Salon at 1800 NW 86th Street in Clive.&

Peter recommends Explosions in the Sky
My recommendation for the month of February would have to be a musical artist. I have always liked this group ever since I discovered them in the movie "Friday Night Lights." The group of musicians I recommend listening to is Explosions In the Sky. They are from Texas, and there is nothing comparable to an acoustic band from Texas! Their songs consists of guitars, drums, but no vocals, which makes it all the better. The top two songs I would recommend giving a listen to on itunes would be"Your Hand In Mine,"and "A Song For Our Fathers." I always put them on when I clean around the house or study. Give them a listen and I bet you will be motivated enough to start cleaning your house!
You've seen the results your friends achieve through Cross Fit, Farrell's Extreme Bodyshaping, and Goals in Motion! Sadly though, you may travel for work or don't have kid coverage for six workouts per week at one of these great gyms. You've considered purchasing P90X or Insanity DVD's but just haven't shelled out the cash yet. If this describes you, becoming a Body Rocker may be the perfect solution. I learned about this free online High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program from an airline pilot who maintained a fantastic physique while traveling all over the world. The internet, his body weight, and motivating coaching by the incredibly ripped Zuzana were the main items needed to keep his body rocking. Check out success storieshereand get started atthis page!

Kansas City TLC Groundhog Run Review
Most winters, all but the most hardcore Iowa runners have to take some of their running indoors. For many this means grinding away on a "dreadmill" with stinky, sweaty gym rats annoyingly close in your personal space. However, two races in the Kansas City metro offer a far different type of indoor run just three hours away.
On January 29, my girlfriend, Val, and I ran theChildren’s TLC Groundhog Run. This race takes place entirely underground in a system of large, street-width tunnels that make up theHunt Midwest Subtropolis. The subtropolis is located just north of the Ameristar Casino not far from Worlds of Fun on the east side of KC. Parking was simple in the casino parking lot with shuttle buses to the subtropolis entrance. The 5k ran at 9 and we arrived shortly after that race started to pick up our race packets and T-shirts for the 10k which started at 10. Race goodies were a bit sparse with just a plain cotton race shirt and some flyers for other races.
The race was chip-timed and limited to 3,500 participants. It reached capacity shortly after the new year. The course was made up of a 5k loop with 10k racers going around twice. I was excited at the prospect of a pancake flat course, but there were some gentle, rolling hills in there that caught me by surprise. I had two concerns going into the race. One was that there would be a lot of sharp turns requiring significant slowing. There were really only two turns that required some slowing. My other concern was that the air quality would be poor. When I'm running I get a bit of an entitlement-attitude that I deserve fresh air since I'm out working hard. I get annoyed if I have to run through cigarette smoke or near a busy, exhaust-smelling road. Overall, I'd say the air quality was great. There was just one 50 yard section that had a strong rotten-egg smell, but it happened to be shortly before the finish line. I was so pooped by the end of my second lap that I was actually thrilled to hit the nasty section as it signified just a minute or so of intense exertion left. The air temperature also fluctuated more than expected. Some sections felt like they reached nearly 70 degrees while certain areas took us close to the tunnel exits and temperatures dropped to more pleasant low 60s. I can't say that the scenery was great, but it was somewhat intriguing. I was interested to see that many major companies as well as the government use the subtropolis for storage. I pondered what government secrets might be hidden underground in KC.
Both Val and I enjoyed our runs. Post-race treats were fairly standard with fresh-looking cinnamon rolls being the main premium treat. Overall, I would highly recommend the Groundhog Run as a great option to beat the usual winter running blues. I learned from another runner that a similar race takes place in a different tunnel system on the west side of Kansas City in early December each year. Check out theJingle Bell Run/Walkif a race like this sounds up your alley (or tunnel) and you just can't wait till next January.
Post-race, Val and I triedFogo de ChaoBrazilian Churrascaria. It was a great, unique dining experience with a tantalizing salad bar and 15 delicious barbecued meats available. Each diner is given a coaster with one green and one red side. If you set it on the table with the green side up, one of the courteous waiters will arrive every minute or so to offer you a different cut of succulent meat sizzling off the skewer. Everything we tried was delicious. I especially enjoyed the smoked salmon from the salad bar. We walked out very satisfied! These Brazilian barbecues are also available in other larger metros such as Minneapolis.Compass Chiropractic

Introducing New Team Members!

Dr. Krohse, Jeanne, Sandy,& Peter
Sandy Holmes – Billing& Back Office Manager
Background: It's great to be working again! I retired from the corporate world 12 years ago where I spent many years focused on developing and overseeing areas that provided high quality, timely customer service for life insurance and annuity policyowners and agents. I'm one of those people who yearned to spend more time enjoying my children as they were growing up and had an epiphany one day whereby I decided it was time to quit thinking about it and in fact, do it! My years of not working also allowed me to have the time to spend as caregiver and advocate for my widowed mom, her gravely ill sister and most recently my 94-year-old uncle. At times, my life resembles chapters out of the book Tuesdays with Morrie. My husband of 35 years and I recently became empty nesters and, as I pondered getting back into the workplace, I knew I wanted to work in an environment and for a cause that I feel passionately about: chiropractic care. Years of being the soccer mom, girl scout leader and carpool queen, left me with significant right leg pain and sciatica from driving, driving and more driving. Several years ago, I became tired of masking the painful symptoms with medicines and went in search of explanations for the cause of my pain and solutions for feeling better on a consistent basis. Chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises have worked wonders for me.
Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: I believe in the work that Dr. Krohse does and I like his mission statement and philosophy for assessing and treating patients. I spend most of my time working behind the scenes on insurance, accounting and billing-related issues, which I love. With a business major in finance and insurance, I know that many people don't necessarily understand their insurance and I enjoy the challenge of ensuring that patients receive the benefits to which they are entitled.
What I enjoy outside of work: Quilting, gardening, Sudoku, reading and vacationing with my family.
How I give back to the community: I've spent the past 15 years of my life heavily involved in the WDM School system as a volunteer and frequent chaperone while supporting and promoting fine arts and music education.
Words to live by: I have a favorite Plato quote: "...as the years go by, time will change and even reverse many of your present opinions. Refrain, therefore, awhile from setting yourself up as judge of the highest matters." And I dearly love the poem "The Station" by Robert J. Hastings.
Favorite local restaurant: Fleming's for a fancy night out, Tasty Tacos for something quick, yummy and local and Fuel for a refreshing dish of yogurt.
Something most patients don’t know about me: During my 12 year hiatus from working, I literally created my own bucket list and have slowly, but surely, been crossing things off. But.....I keep adding to it too! Scariest thing still on the list? Doing a tandem parachute jump from an airplane.
Peter Lovan – Practice Representative
Background: I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. I began and graduated from Des Moines Christian School. After graduating in 2008, I began my college education at Iowa State University and DMACC with a major in computer science. Coming this semester, I will be transferring to Grandview College as a junior. I recently got married to my high school sweetheart in October of 2011. My wife and I adopted two dogs from the Animal Rescue League, and we are already seeing that parenting is a challenge!
Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: I like meeting new people and being a part of their recovery. It's amazing to see the progress first hand with patients.
What I enjoy outside of work: I enjoy fitness and recreational sports. I currently play in an indoor soccer team with a few of my friends. My wife and I enjoy outdoor activities. We love taking our dogs to the dog park, fishing, and just being a newly married couple,
How I give back to the community: I like to volunteer with Meals from the Heartland, Habitat for Humanity, and Kids Against Hunger. In the summer, I enjoy helping my family run the Meals from the Market stand at the Downtown Farmer's Market. I benefit from knowing our own community is being helped by other local Iowans.
Words to live by: Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. -Jim Rohn
Favorite local restaurant: Mustard's Barbeque has the best rib, chicken combination platter.
Something most patients don’t know about me: I can speak fluent Laos and Thai. I also enjoy cooking and baking new and traditional dishes.
Jeanne RecommendsRed Rossa Restaurant

This is one of our very favorite places for a light fun dinner. My husband, Brad, loves the pizza. It’s baked in a wood burning oven and the Chicken Alfredo or the BBQ Chicken are his favorites. My favorite is one of the delicious salads "a libretto" style. That means that they serve the cold salad wrapped in a warm soft pizza crust. It’s the best of both - eating healthy and light but still having the comfort of warm bread! I have tried several of the salads and they are all tasty!! They also have a wide variety of nice wines if you are so inclined. My favorite beverage is their iced tea. It is called "China Mist" and it’s difficult to find in the Des Moines area. The atmosphere is family friendly. Even though the dining room isn't huge, it's very comfortable. I hope that you get a chance to check it out soon! :)

These Brazilian barbecues are also available in other larger metros such as Minneapolis.Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete – Loran Storts

Loran is a busy man! Along with his endurance coaching business, Iron Works, he also assists with coaching the Dowling cross country team. Loran is a true competitor and an awesome example for the athletes he coaches! At Compass Chiropractic, we are glad to have helped him achieve his fitness and health goals as described below.
As an endurance athlete I have had my share of injuries over the past 30+ years of training& racing. I had been looking for someone that practices ART so that is how I found Compass Chiropractic. Dr Krohse took the time to ask questions, listened to my specific needs, pinpointed areas that could be strengthened, and showed me additional stretches/strengthening that I could do on my own. In the 6 weeks I have been seeing Dr Krohse I feel much more in-tune with my body; he has helped me work through some injuries that would otherwise sideline me for a couple of weeks. Thank you Dr Krohse for helping me stay on top of my game and on the podium at the races!

Jeanne Recommends Winter Jam 2012
If you like Christian Contemporary music this will blow your socks off! It’s down at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, Jan 20th. The tickets are only $10/person to get in. The artist line up is always awesome and a nice mix of up& coming new artists and some great favorites. The headliner (just here in Iowa!!!) is my all-time favorite artist: Tobymac. He is a hard rocker but his message is totally awesome! Plus the music has a heavy bass beat the keeps your heart pumping while you can’t stand still!!! If you thought that Christian music was all nice melodies and fun sing-alongs, then you haven’t seen nothin’ yet!!! Winter Jam comes to DSM every year and it’s a blast!! See you down at the Well!!

Jeanne Recommends her Favorite Pork Recipes
Recently we had the opportunity to present a lunch and learn on "How to Stay Young the First 100 Years at Work" at the National Pork Board. Our visit gave us a renewed appreciation of "the other white meat."
I usually buy a 4-6 lb pork tenderloin and cut it in half.
The first half I slice into 6 - 1” chops, marinade these in a Ziploc bag with ½ bottle of Italian (oily) dressing for at least 15 mins. Grill them up and serve them with roasted red potatoes and a green steamed veggie!!
The other half I will slow cook in the crock pot for about 6 hours with nothing but 2-3 cans of Cream of Mushroom soup. The meat just melts in your mouth and the juices make the soup into a delicious gravy that I serve over creamy mashed potatoes. It is wonderful to come home to on these cold dark evenings!!
Hope that you enjoy these with your family!
Dr. Krohse Recommends Healthier Living and Optimal Weight
Since January, 2010 I have personally made some drastic improvements to my diet which have led to sustained healthier weight. I've enjoyed the improved confidence, faster running times, better energy levels, and decreased allergies that I've experienced as a result of changing my nutrition. For others looking to make changes I'm happy to share the two strategies that I believe work best for people.
Standard Process Purification Program combined with Education on Proper Nutrition
My personal dietary improvement got a huge jump start from the Standard Process Purification Program. I detailed my experience with that at myblog. In the time since I completed the purification, I have read two books that have guided my dietary strategies. Brief summaries of those books are below:
The Paleo Solutionby Robb Wolf - Until the 20th century, many foods that can be so easily obtained today were not available on a regular basis. Our bodies were challenged with far fewer foods. By looking at what people ate before refrigeration, modern transportation, and the agricultural revolution we can discover why certain food groups now considered part of a "balanced diet" may be harmful to our health and ideal weight maintenance, especially in the proportions commonly consumed today. Though the recommendations initially look daunting, Robb shares that most people can follow 80 percent of the recommendations and get 95 percent of the benefits of the paleo diet, making this plan much more palatable. This is one of the funniest books on nutrition that I've read.
Why We Get Fat and What to Do About Itby Gary Taubes - When people think about losing weight, most think about just two variables: caloric intake and exercise. In enthralling expose-style writing, Gary Taubes shares that a third variable, hormonal control of body composition, has a larger effect than either of the first two. If your hormones are telling your body to increase or maintain its fat stores, then practically no amount of exercise and calorie restriction will result in long term weight loss. In fact, it will most likely lead a person to become fatigued as your body steals energy to maintain fat. The hormone insulin tells your body to store fat. In order to decrease insulin's control of your body composition, you need to decrease the carbohydrates that lead to high insulin levels.
Take Shape for Life featuring Medifast Meals
I personally have friends and colleagues who have thrived and lost triple-digit weight with the Take Shape for Life program. With this program, you simply have five Medifast meals each day and then one Lean and Green meal. There are over 70 delicious Medifast meals to choose from. For the Lean and Green meal you get to choose a lean protein and your favorite vegetables. One additional benefit of this program is that you get a free health coach who guides you and provides knowledge and accountability. I strongly recommend local health coach Kristin Rinderknecht. She can be reached at 515-979-6784 or kcrinder@gmail.com. Learn more at her website:www.coachkristin.tsfl.com.

November's Waiting Room Wellness - Movies We're Most Thankful For
During the month of November, we're sharing the movies that we're most thankful for with our patients and friends. We have clipboards in our waiting room where patients and visitors are encouraged to share their suggestions, which we'll put in a list in next month's newsletter. We did a similar theme with books last year and I have read a number of our patients suggestions and found them all to be excellent. I'm excited to learn some movies to put on my "must watch list" for the long, dark winter ahead.
Jeanne is most thankful for:

Dr. Krohse is most thankful for:
* The Shawshank Redemption: "Get busy living, or get busy dying." How can a movie with somewhat dark depressing content be ultimately so incredibly inspiring? This is, in my opinion, a perfectly made movie. You will want to stand up and cheer at the end.* Dumb and Dumber: I know I'll get some flack for this, but this movie never gets old. I believe it has more laughs and one-liners per minute than any other movie made. "Life is a fragile thing... One minute you're chewin' on a burger, the next minute you're dead meat."
* ChiRunning: This book and movie helped me get rid of chronic shin splints and took my running hobby to another level. "Never give up on something you can't go a day without thinking about"

Dr. Krohse Recommends Custom Earbuds from Dr. Kimberly Krambeck at the Iowa Clinic
I love music and I love running. However, I don't like earbuds and earphones that fall out or flop around while I'm running. Recently I upgraded my active audio with a pair of custom earbuds fitted byDr. Kimberly Krambeck at the Iowa Clinic. Dr. Krambeck is a runner who has completed multiple marathons including New York, San Antonio, and Des Moines. She understands and enjoys working with fellow athletes.
The process was simple. I called the Iowa Clinic Audiology department and let them know I needed to schedule a time with Dr. Krambeck to be fitted for custom sport earbuds. I went in and she took a mold of each of my ears while I debated what color buds would be best. Ultimately I chose clear buds with blue swirls. The buds were ready to go in a week or so and slip over a standard Apple or Sony style bud. They look fast and the sound quality is great. Most importantly, I don't have to worry about them falling out of my ears any more. Cost of the custom sports buds varies but is generally between $100 and $150 I believe (don't quote me on that). That may sound a bit steep, but I was easily able to rationalize these as a long term investment leading to more enjoyable running.
I recommend Dr. Krambeck for all your audiology needs, whether it's getting a pair of these custom sports earbuds or determining whether you are a candidate for a hearing aid. She is very personable and knowledgeable! You can schedule with her at 515-875-9450.

Condition of the Month – Numbness& Tingling
We help many patients with conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, ulnar neuropathy and other forms of numbness and tingling.
Nerve cells are very different from all the other cells in the body. While all other cells are microscopic and relatively round, individual nerve cells extend all the way from the spine to the tips of the fingers and toes. Millions of these individual cells extend out from the spine in the thicker tube-like structures known as nerves. Nerves are responsible for carrying sensation, muscle control, and organ control messages to the entire body.
Because of nerve cells’ length, they function a bit like a hose coming out of a house. If someone steps on the hose near the house, it may not cut off the flow of the water. However it will then take less pressure by someone further out to cut off the flow entirely.
Similarly, when a person experiences nerve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or burning/pulling/shocking pain in an arm or leg, there may be multiple spots between the spine and the tips of the fingers where the nerve is being “pinched.”
Chiropractic care works by restoring dysfunctional joints in the spine to normal motion, reducing the swelling that “pinches” the nerves as they exit the spine. Dr. Krohse’s other specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, loosens and relaxes problem muscles that affect nerves in the arms and legs. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to keep nerves from being pinched again. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.

Thanks to all who contributed to our Special Olympics Over the Edge Fundraiser. We drew a participant from the names of new patients who had come in as well as those who referred new patients in to our office during the time of the fundraiser. Our first winner passed on the opportunity due to a fear of heights. Bob McConnell, who you may remember me recommending inlast month's newsletter, was the lucky guy whose name was drawn second. On Wednesday September 21 he rappelled down the side of the Financial Center downtown! Also, in the spirit of the event, Bob went on to raise a few hundred dollars personally for Special Olympics! Thanks Bob for taking on this challenge and for helping us help Special Olympics!

Condition of the Month – Kids& Chiropractic
The top three conditions that adults visit chiropractors for are back pain, neck pain, and headaches. However, many parents are surprised to learn that the reasons children visit a chiropractor are quite different.
Top Reasons Kids Visit a Chiropractor:
2. 10.6% Neck Pain
3. 10.3% Check-up
4. 8.8% Headache
5. 7.1% Upper Resp. Infection
6. 6.3% Low Back Pain
7. 4.5% Allergies
8. 3.3% Asthma
9. 3.3% Bedwetting
10. 3.2% Upper Back Pain
11. Chronic Constipation
If your child or the child of someone you know is suffering from these conditions, consider giving safe and effective chiropractic care a chance before trying higher risk drugs and surgery.
Would you like your child to be examined to see if there are any problems. Take advantage of an upcoming Kid's Day – the first Tuesday of each month. On this day children under 13 receive any needed services at no charge!

Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete – Cam Kirkpatrick
Cam recently placed 9th in the huge Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival just barely off the times of Tour de France cyclists Jason McCartney and Christian VandeVelde. Congrats!

Sport: Mountain Biking
Other Sponsors/Affiliations:Rasmussen Bike Shop,Orbea,Oakley
Day Job: Senior Civil/Structural Engineer forChicago Bridge& Iron, Inc.
I’ve been racing mountain bikes for the past 12 years, and over the past 6 or 7 years I began to notice a gradual increase in lower back discomfort that eventually transitioned into sometimes unbearable pain. I would finish a race, dismount my bike and it would take me about 5 minutes to stand up straight. I had pretty much accepted the back pain as a part of getting older and figured that it would be something that I was going to have to deal with as long as I kept riding and racing.
I chose to seek treatment from Dr. Krohse based on recommendations from a few friends and also because Dr. Krohse actively participates in a lot of the same cycling activities that I do. His intimate understanding of the demands on the human body from competitive cycling have proven to be invaluable. After two weeks of bi-weekly treatments, I began to notice a remarkable change in how my lower back felt during and after races. The unbearable pain began to transition back to minor discomfort to a point where I had a relatively pain free race 3 weeks after seeing Dr. Krohse. I plan to continue chiropractic treatment with Dr. Krohse as a regular part of my training regime.
If you’re considering chiropractic treatment, I would highly recommend Dr. Krohse. I haven’t been to very many chiropractors throughout my life, but I find it hard to believe that you will find a better doctor to take care of your needs!

Dr. Krohse Recommends Bob McConnell CSA – Medicare Insurance Specialist (515)360-5375
Do you feel confident you are making the right decisions about your health insurance? Do you have family members unsure how to transition from a group health plan through their employer into Medicare? Is there extra stress in your life because your parents or loved ones are nearing retirement age and haven’t purchased long term care insurance yet? For all those situations, I highly recommend that you call Bob McConnell to discuss all of your questions about health insurance, life insurance, or long term care insurance. He is a fantastic resource and helps each individual find the best coverage for their individual situation. He primarily works with American Republic Insurance Company and I’ve also had a number of highly satisfied patients who have their insurance through American Republic. Give Bob a call at 515-360-5375.
Condition of the Month – Neck Pain
Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care. While the neck itself can be very painful, structures in the neck can also cause pain up into the head or down into the
upper back, shoulders, and arms.Whiplash injuries are especially likely to negatively affect the neck. Many times people assume that the soreness, pain, and tightness of a slower speed fender bender will go away soon. Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete – Loran Storts

Loran is a busy man! Along with his endurance coaching business, Iron Works, he also assists with coaching the Dowling cross country team. Just recently he successfully completed Ironman Wisconsin.

Running with a Hip Labral Tear - Avoid / Postpone Hip Arthroscopy
Running with a Hip Labral Tear –Avoid Hip Labral Tear Surgery
After developing a set of symptoms consistent with a labral tear, I spent some time readingonline running forums. I got the feeling that I am not alone in being very frustrated with a likely diagnosis of labral tear and being very motivated to continue with the running that I have grown to love (and am quite possibly addicted to). With that in mind, I wanted to share my experience in the hopes that it might help other runners facing a diagnosis of hip labral tear get back to doing what they love, even if it’s modified a bit. So with that, let’s dive into my history.
I was half way through my first marathon training program and making phenomenal progress (gunning for a Boston Qualifier on my debut) when during a tempo run I experienced some pain in my left hip. This was on perhaps a Tuesday before my first big tune-up race, the Drake Half Marathon. I ran this relatively hilly race with a pace of 6:31. I was proud of my progress (I was running a 7:30 5K a year or so before but had made major strides by implementing a combination ofChi RunningandEvolution Runningand dropping 35 pounds through theStandard Process Purification Programand overall improved diet) but aware that my hip felt worse by the end of it. My training plan from Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger called for a 20 mile run the next day so I went out to do it. My hip got worse over the first 3 miles to the point where it was giving me a sharp stab deep in the joint radiating to the groin with each step so I stopped and walked dejectedly back to my car. I stopped running for 2 or maybe 3 weeks while I aggressively stretched my hips and focused on keeping my cardio up with cycling. I focused on stretching the adductors, piriformis, and hip flexors but was aware that stretching did not necessarily feel beneficial. Being a chiropractor, Active Release Techniques Provider, and active person, I think of myself as quite in tune with the different types of pain and was aware that with the stretching I felt a “block” sensation within the ball and socket joint on adductor stretching rather than a beneficial feeling stretch of the hip flexors or adductors. With that I started looking into hip labral tears online. Quite frankly, the information on the forums was quite depressing. As a chiropractor, I am the sole source of income for my business and I was reading articles of people needing crutches for 6 or more weeks after hip labral tear surgery. That kind of time out of my practice was impossible. I considered having an MRI with contrast done to confirm the diagnosis, but came to the conclusion that it was irrelevant as it wouldn’t change my actions. I wasn’t currently interested in surgery or a steroid injection, so I would be resting my hip no matter what. With a high deductible health insurance plan it didn’t make sense to pay for a test that wouldn’t change my actions at all.
After 2-3 weeks I was walking relatively pain free so I started running again. After all, I was in the middle of a training program. On Monday I ran two miles, Wednesday - five, and Friday - seven, but when I got to 10 my hip started to give me a sharp pain again. I stopped but at that point I had aggravated the hip to the point where I was getting a sharp stab even during normal walking and while giving low back chiropractic adjustments to patients. That lasted for about 10 days. I resigned myself that I would not be doing the Dam to Dam 20K or the Duluth Marathon and tried to tell myself I enjoyed cycling and open water swimming as much as running. It didn’t work. I got my wake-up call over a Fourth of July camping weekend when hot humid weather woke me up frequently during the night causing me to remember my dreams. Normally I don’t remember them. My dreams were all about running and they were good. I was fast. I resolved to find a way to start running again.
Below is the plan I followed to get back to running. I can’t say it’s been totally successful because I’m in the middle of it. I’ll update it if I reach my goal. I do want to be clear that this is not medical advice. Running with a labral tear could certainly result in short term pain or possibly make your situation worse. Your individual situation is certainly different than mine. There’s also a possibility that you could accelerate degenerative changes in your hip. Consult your sports doctor if you have questions about any of these ideas I used.
I let my hip get relatively pain free during walking and short runs.
I had already watched the videosChi RunningandEvolution Running. For those of you out there reading this article and feeling hopeless, I strongly recommend that you watch these two videos. They show you how to minimize stress into the various parts of the body. They have many similarities but just enough differences where I really have to recommend that you watch them both and implement elements of each of them.
I recognized some goals to minimize labral tear aggravation during running. The stretches I was doing seemed to make things worse so I stopped doing them and the hip improved. This seemed to indicate that the labrum was actually aggravated by being taken through full range of motion. From the perspective of running with a labral tear, I saw three main goals. The first is to minimize the shock into the hip ball-and-socket joint. The second is to minimize the forward and backwards movement of the upper leg bone within the ball and socket joint. The third is to minimize inflammation. With those goals, I set up my rules for running.
My rules for running
a. Forward lean – I was already using a forward lean. This concept is mainly taught in the Chi Running DVD. With a forward lean you let gravity pull you forward. Your foot lands under your center of gravity as you are moving forward which prevents the major shock from traveling up your leg. When your foot strikes in front of your center of gravity (in particular with the heel first) you have a major impact as the weight of your core body is moving down and forward at the time the heel strikes. An impact shock travels up the leg when your heel strikes and would certainly affect the hip ball and socket joint. Running upright with the heel striking in front of the body can be thought of a bit as stomping on the car brake for an instant with every step. With a forward lean you minimize shock into the ball-and-socket hip joint.
b. 200 steps per minute – both the Chi Running and Evolution Running DVDs recommend a running cadence of about 180 steps per minute. This would be if you were counting both foot strikes. If you were only counting your right foot strikes it would be 90 steps per minute. I personally go beyond their recommendations and shoot for 200 steps per minute. The reason this is recommended is that speeding up your running cadence decreases the amount of up and down movement of the core body. Ideally, we’d like to see the top of your waist and your head move up and down as little as possible. A person who runs at a cadence of 120 steps per minute might have 2-3 inches of up and down movement at the hips and head. This up and down movement can be viewed as shock and stress into the hip joint as it lets the weight of your upper body crash down into the legs with every step. When I run at 200 steps per minute, I only feel my hips and head move up and down perhaps a half a centimeter. Compare your running to bicycling. Bicycling is considered low impact and efficient because on a bicycle your hips don’t move up and down at all. The second benefit of a faster cadence is that for any given running speed, it shortens your stride. This minimizes movement into the hip ball-and-socket joint. Try to use a faster cadence to minimize vertical motion of the hips and core body and to minimize forward and backward movement of the upper leg. There are many free metronome apps for iPhone and Android phones. I strongly recommend you run with a metronome all the time as you start this process. I use aiTickon my iPhone almost every time I run. I have the sounds set to cowbell so I can imagineWill Ferrell cheering me on as I run.
c. Ball of Foot (Forefoot) Strike – The Evolution Running DVD recommends forefoot strike where your heel never touches the ground. It highlights that with a forefoot strike all the impact stress is absorbed by the calf muscles, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia. Try standing still and try to stomp the ground as hard as possible, but don’t let your heel touch the ground. Now try stomping down heel first. You’ll feel that as long as you don’t let the heel touch the ground it’s impossible to generate significant impact shock up into the hip. Forefoot strike minimizes shock but I’ll be honest, it can be a bear to adapt. At first you’re going to think your calves hate you. However, you have to remember that it’s better that your calves hate you than that screwed up hip. You have to ease into this one. If you’ve never run with a forefoot strike I recommend a very gradual progression.
d. Lift the lower leg off the ground rather than push your body forward – If you get the lean and the cadence down right, you can focus on keeping your upper legs relatively still while lifting your lower leg off the ground. This will minimize movement into the hip ball and socket joint. To integrate this, first practice running in place with a metronome trying to keep your upper leg still and just lift the lower leg off the ground. Then while you’re out for a run, pick a point in the distance and imagine a bungee cord from your chest to the point. Imagine that the tight bungee is pulling you forward. All you have to do is lift your feet and lower legs below the knees off the ground fast enough and you will move toward that point. This visualization should help you do a proper forward lean which combined with the quick cadence moves you forward and minimizes motion into the hips.
e. Day in between each run – If you’re used to running daily for fitness or to follow one of the popular running training guides, I know it can be hard to skip a day. However, I personally had to come to terms with the fact that despite all my steps to change my running style, there was still some amount of inflammation in the hip every time I went for a run. I had to be thankful I wasn’t getting the sharp pain. By leaving a day in between each run I’ve been able to build up to a consistent three to four mile run three to four times per week. On the positive side, faster seems to be less stressful on the hip so it’s not as if I’m plodding along slowly. I ran my fastest 3 mile ever on the trail recently and felt no worse for it. I’ve recently drawn up a training program that will take me up to 6 mile runs (and hopefully a sub-18 minute 5K). The training plan is based on the bookRun Faster from 5K to Marathon by Hudsonwhich is great for my situation as he recommends an adaptive training plan where you listen to your body every day, your plan is in pencil, and you anticipate that you will make changes to the plan to maintain your health.
f. Listen to your body – I am very focused on my hip. For me, mild dull aches are ok but if I feel even a hint of sharp pain, my training plan is off until it’s gone. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.
g. Gradual build – I set out the above rules and stuck to them. If my cadence dropped below 195 steps per minute I stopped and walked. If blisters on the ball of my foot stopped me from doing my forefoot strike I stopped and walked. If I had never done any forefoot striking I would have followed the best progression for true beginners – (1 min run, 3 min walk) and repeat for the first week, (2 min run, 2 min walk) for the second week, (3 min run, 1 min walk) for the third week and progress to some short continous running. I have actually been following the rule that you should only increase your running by 10% per week. I’m trying to learn from my past stubborn foolishness and I’m very motivated to stay healthy while running.
h. Minimal shoes – Personally, I am usingVibram FiveFinger Bikilas. I find that they help me make sure that I never let my heel touch the ground. Also, they are conducive to that super quick cadence as there is no foam to slow down my foot-ground contact time. However, I do get some soreness in my feet. For people reading this, I’d consider minimal shoes like the FiveFingers but otherwise at least get some shoes with a minimal heel-toe height difference which are conducive to forefoot strike such as theSaucony Kinvaras or perhaps some Newtons.
I hope my experience and plan help you form a plan to run with a labral tear. I’m sure there are true surgical cases but I hope that my game plan laid out here keeps me running for a while and possibly forever without what I view as a risky surgery. Feel free to give feedback in the comments section.

On a friend and fellow runner’s recommendation, I recently picked up the bookUnbrokenby Laura Hillenbrand through the Clive Library’sWILBORaudiobook system. This is one powerful, true story written by the same author who penned Seabiscuit. It tells the story of Louie Zamperini, who became the pride of the United States with his running performance in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Following his success there, Louie ended up flying in the South Pacific where his plane crashed down. His trials on a life raft and in prisoner of war camps will leave you holding your breath as you will Louie to remain unbroken. I highly recommend this book to everyone!&

She made our portraits fun, yet professional. I’d recommend her to anyone looking for great family, children, senior, professional, or wedding portraits.
Condition of the Month – Nutrition& Weight Management
The Standard Process Purification Program has enabled staff members and patients of Compass Chiropractic to get their nutrition on the right track. This 21 day program has generally resulted in people losing eight to nine percent of their body weight with most of the 30+ people who have purchased it at Compass Chiropractic reporting 14-18 pounds lost during the program. Along with the excitement of that rapid change, people have reported increased energy, improved digestion, decreased allergies, and other positive changes. Most importantly, this program allows you to eat an unlimited variety of vegetables and fruit, with the stipulation that you need to keep them in a 2:1 ratio. Because of this, many have been able to successfully transition into a healthier lifestyle and make the long term changes needed for continued successful maintenance of a healthy weight and body shape.
Through August 2011, Dr. Krohse has maintained between 25 and 35 pounds less weight than before going through the purification program.
Though our main specialties are neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, hip pain, and sports injuries, we strive to empower our patients to whole life long-term wellness and better health.During the month of August, we have reduced the cost of the Standard Process Purification Program by $50 to $173 + tax.

I have also won the Player of the Year award for Women's Open division under the USPTA in 2008 and 2009.
Future Goals: My future goals include competing on the WTA tour (the most prestigious women's tennis organization) and earning a world ranking and recognition.
Experience at Compass Chiropractic:Before starting care with Dr. Krohse I hadn't tried chiropractic care. I was surprised how simple adjustments can positively affect your overall physical condition. I have had a chronic lower back pain for about a year. After starting treatment at Compass Chiropractic I haven't experienced any major problems in that area.
Dr. Krohse was friendly and professional. He took the time to develop a personal program for me so I can strengthen my body and prevent future problems. I feel that I have improved my flexibility and strengthened my core, which is very important to tennis players.
I would definitely recommend Compass Chiropractic to other athletes. Dr. Krohse is very knowledgeable and, as an athlete himself, understands the importance of ultimate physical condition to outstanding performance.

Late last fall I hesitantly entered the world of salsa with the free introductory lessons held weekly at Kitty’s dance club from 9-10 on Thursdays. Friends from Central Iowa’s premier outdoor club,Iowa Outdoor Unlimited, were shaking it and even becoming instructors for Salsa Des Moines and they convinced this two-left-footed, rhythm-impaired white boy to give it a try. I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and expertise of the instructors that I ended up taking beginner lessons on Friday nights at Des Moines Ballroom. Along the way, I’ve attended a couple of Salsa Des Moines’ excellent Salsa With the Stars events held at the Embassy Club and Embassy Club West as well as a salsa and wine event at Jasper Winery. At the end of March, I officially became an “Intermediate Salsa Dancer.” If I can do it, anyone can! Check their website and head out to an introductory lesson this week. Don’t worry if you don’t have a partner; most beginner classes rotate partners anyway and you will meet wonderful friends and dancing partners rapidly!
Condition of the Month – Chiropractic Skepticism
We frequently see new patients come in who share “I don’t believe in chiropractic” only to find themselves feeling so much better a short time later with some quality chiropractic care. Chiropractic care isn’t something that needs to be believed in. It works. In person with spinal model in hand, I can quickly show how it works, but for the skeptics out there, I recommend considering this information:
·Consumer Reportsin April, 2009 found that back pain sufferers rated chiropractors and chiropractic adjustments as the most effective
· Medicare and Medicaid cover chiropractic care - your government has found chiropractic to be effective and cost effective
· All major insurances cover chiropractic care
· You have 132 joints in your spine! If one of them is not moving right, chiropractic adjustments help restore them to normal motion
Chiropractic care works by restoring dysfunctional joints in the spine to normal motion, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. Dr. Krohse’s other specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, loosens and relaxes problem muscles that can cause a variety of problems. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to stabilize their spine. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.

Introducing Rachel Lang

Office Manager& Practice Representative
Background: My name is Rachel Lang and I’m 21 years old (almost 22!). I am from Johnston and graduated from Johnston High School May of 2008. I have two wonderful parents, Mark and Becky. I also have an older brother Rob, who is currently studying hard for his accounting certification boards. I attendBethel Universityin St. Paul, Minnesota during the school year and live with 4 of the greatest roommates I could ever ask for! I have one more year left until I graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Growing up I was involved in many sports and extracurricular activities. I am very excited to be a new member of the Compass Chiropractic team!
Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: One of my favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic is working in a patient care setting. I am learning so much about Chiropractic and the amazing effects it has on improving patient’s health and quality of life. I love assisting Dr. Krohse in helping patients recover and get better as quickly as possible. In addition, I think the rehab sessions are a great way to help patients take their care home with them, so they have tools to stay healthy for the long term.
What I enjoy outside of work: Outside of work I love spending time with my friends and family. We love doing anything outdoors whether it is camping in the Colorado Mountains, playing a game of tennis, or watching baseball games. I also enjoy attending Dave Ramsey Financial Peace classes with my dad on Saturdays. My friends and I like to take advantage of our free time in between classes by going camping, watching good movies, playing intramural broomball, and anything else we can think of!
How I give back to the community: In high school I was involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and youth group, and it was an amazing way to learn about God, be accountable and serve the community. The past two years I’ve loved volunteering for Vacation Bible School at church. In college I am a part of WelcomeWeek, which is a student association that welcomes and transitions new students to campus at Bethel University. I have also helped out at a few elementary schools in the Stillwater school District measuring the Body Mass Index’s of the children in an effort to obtain a grant for the district.
Favorite local restaurant: As much as I love mom’s cooking, I’d never say no to eat out at a Mexican Restaurant! One of our favorites isMonterreyoff of University Ave, although we are still exploring different Mexican restaurants in the area. When I’m up in the twin cities then Café Latte is a fun stop.
Something most patients don’t know about me: The most unique thing I’ve ever done is go cave swimming in Belize.
Dr. Krohse Recommends A Couple Nutrition Books
I never thought books on nutrition could be page turners. However, I recently read two books that produced that “can’t put down” feeling and kept me reading later into the night than intended.
The Paleo Solutionby Robb Wolf was written in a light and colorful tone that had me smiling frequently as I learned why the “balanced” diet most people strive to eat actually throws the body out of balance causing weight gain as well as a number of health conditions for many people. A strict paleo diet would include lean meats, fresh veggies and fruits, and nuts. You wouldn’t eat any grains, dairy, or legumes (beans). Before Robb gets into the specifics of the diet he does share that most people can eat 80% paleo and get 95% of the benefits of this diet. I highly recommend this captivating diet book!
Why We Get Fat& What to Do About Itby Gary Taubes dropped my jaw. He takes two of the most universally accepted keys to weight loss “eat less and exercise more” and debunks them. In easily understandable language he shows how hormones actually have a greater influence on body weight and fat accumulation than how much you eat or how many calories you burn. Some hormones are outside of your control but others, such as insulin are influenced by what you eat. Simpy put, there are good calories and bad calories and once you understand that you can put together a strategy, such as a strict or modified paleo or Atkins diet to maintain great health and your desired body composition. Awesome book!
Spotlight onTeam Compass ChiropracticAthlete – Denny Torgerson
Sport: Bowling

Membership: Professional Bowlers Association
Day Job: Owner ofVal Lanes
My Name is Denny Torgerson, and I am a professional bowler that has to my credit 1 National PBA Championship, 4 Regional PBA championships, and 5 Iowa State Championships. In order to maintain anything close to this level of performance, a bowler’s body must be hitting on all cylinders.
Athletes like to continue their good performance throughout their lives, but as they get older strength and flexibility decreases. I have found that regular chiropractic care and corresponding exercise helps me maintain much of that flexibility. This allows me to compete at a good level in my sport even though many of my competitors are younger. Bowling requires carrying a 15# weight over 16 feet and then hitting a 1 inch target 60 feet away as many as 60 to 100 times a session. This is not an easy task if the athlete has sore muscles or muscle pain. I find that regular chiropractic care helps these muscles perform at a higher level.
My goal is to maintain the same bowling average as I have throughout most of my bowling career. Since I have been coming to Dr. Krohse at Compass Chiropractic my average has increased back to the level I wish to maintain. I just feel “loose” and more relaxed as I compete. Another goal I have is to maintain my current bowling average of 200+ at the National Bowling Tournament each year. I have been participating in this tournament around the US for 41 years and my average came back up this year. I have to think that Compass Chiropractic helped me with that goal. I would recommend Dr. Krohse to any athlete wishing to maintain good performance levels.

Kayla recommends Johnny’s Hall of Fame Bar and Grill
Last Friday a friend and I went out for dinner toJohnny’s Hall of Fame Bar and Grilldowntown on Court Ave. It was the first time I had ever been there and let me tell you I LOVED IT! It’s a very casual and relaxed environment so you don't have to worry about getting all dressed up. You can just wear a comfortable t-shirt and jeans. You will seat yourself at the bar, a table, a booth, or on the patio. They have big screen TVs all around the restaurant with sports playing and games in the back like pool and different arcade games. The prices are very reasonable and you can either order food off the menu like we did or you can go back by the games and get food from the buffet. From what I saw people carrying they have different things like popcorn, nachos, and pizza.
I ended up getting their French dip sandwich with onions and French fries. It was huge and delicious! So with the atmosphere, good pricing, and great food I would definitely recommend this restaurant and plan on going back very soon.

Baked Asparagus Wraps
These asparagus wraps are extremely simple to make and taste phenomenal. I was introduced to these by a friend following a gluten-free diet. The recipe can be made even healthier by wrapping multiple spears in each piece of meat. I have made them for multiple events and they always got rave reviews for their fresh colorful look and great taste. When I first shared with my nieces and nephews that I’d made them I heard feedback of “yuck” and “gross.” I convinced them to try the spears at our Easter lunch and they all requested seconds and thirds.
Ingredients
1 bundle of fresh asparagus
1 tub whipped cream cheese
½ pound of smoked ham, turkey, or prosciutto
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Rinse asparagus and break spears at their tender points
3. Spread a small amount of whipped cream cheese on the edge of a spear
4. Wrap spear in meat and place on baking sheet
5. Once spears are arranged on sheet lightly sprinkle with pepper
6. Bake for 15 minutes
7. Serve as an appetizer or main course
Condition of the Month – Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are one of the most common forms of headache. They can occur at any age, but are most common in adults and adolescents. If a headache occurs two or more times weekly for several months or longer, the condition is considered chronic. Tension headaches result from the contraction of neck and scalp muscles. One cause of this muscle contraction is a response to stress, depression or anxiety. Any activity that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time without moving can cause a headache. Such activities include typing or use of computers, fine work with the hands, and use of a microscope. Sleeping in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal position can also trigger this type of headache. Other causes include spinal misalignment, eye strain, fatigue, alcohol use, excessive smoking, excessive caffeine use, sinus infection, nasal congestion, overexertion, colds, and influenza. Tension headaches are not associated with structural lesions in the brain.Through a combination of chiropractic care, Active Release Techniques problem-focused muscle work, and postural exercises we are able to resolve or greatly improve most tension and migraine headache conditions. To see if our care may be able to help you call 515.309.1217 to schedule a new patient visit or complimentary consultation.

Introducing Kayla
Office Manager& Practice Representative

Background: My name is Kayla Tweedt and I’m 20 years old, I’ll be 21 on July 9th. I was born and raised on the south side of Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School May of 2008. I have two wonderful parents named Tami and David. I also have one younger sibling named David who will be graduating from Lincoln this spring. I was very involved in gymnastics growing up whether it was doing it or coaching it. I am very excited to be a new member of the Compass Chiropractic team!
Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: One of my favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic is working in an environment I’m interested in pursuing in the future. I can learn more and get an idea if it’s really something I’m interested in. Also I really like the fact that Compass Chiropractic is very involved with helping the community and different charitable events.
What I enjoy outside of work: Outside of work I love spending time with my friends and family. I have a very close family so we do spend a lot of time together. I also have some great friends who love to be active and are very involved in different forms of art. During the summer we will all get together and play volleyball, disc golf, ultimate frisbee, and other outdoor games. I also enjoy reading, painting, swimming, and watching as many good movies as possible.
How I give back to the community: In high school I was involved in a couple different programs. One was called the Ambassador program where we would volunteer to help with different things in the community. We were very involved with Rock In Prevention where we’d go to elementary schools and talk to kids about the Character Counts pillars. Also in high school I was involved with HOPE Drama Troupe where we would go to middle and high schools and put on different performances to help prevent and inform young people about child abuse and awareness.
Words to live by: “You don’t have to agree, you don’t have to believe, you just have to respect.” This is a quote I live by because there’s so much conflict and not much respect. Just because you and someone else have a difference of opinion doesn’t mean you have to be disrespectful and put the other person down.
Favorite local restaurant: I’m a huge sushi fan and one of my all time favorite restaurants is Miyabi 9 in the East Village. It’s right over by House of Bricks. Even if you don’t like sushi they have many different cooked foods too. Recommended roll to try: Miami Heat Roll.
Something most patients don’t know about me: I don’t get embarrassed easily and I was in theater and show choir as a student in high school so I love to perform.
My experience with chiropractic: Since I did gymnastics I did go to a chiropractor many times growing up. It always made me feel better afterwards.
Thank you for helping us raise funds for the Leukemia& Lymphoma Society

Abbey Recommends Court Avenue Brewing Company
This past Sunday I went toCourt Avenue Breweryfor an early dinner. I had only been there once, actually it was before I had moved to the Des Moines area, and remembered that they served great food. Once again, Court Avenue did not disappoint. The atmosphere was fantastic and I love the building that it is located in. We were seated immediately in the bar area and were greeted by our waitress in within a couple of minutes. My boyfriend enjoys trying new beers, so he definitely loved the fact that they brew their own beer. We split the margherita pizza and a few wings. Sunday wings are $.49 so we could not pass them up. With the warm weather hopefully here to stay, a nice lunch or dinner on the patio would be a great addition to your day. If you do want to sit outside I do suggest getting there a little earlier than planned as they do not have a huge patio. Overall, it was great service and food and I will definitely be going back before I move in May.
Dr. Krohse Recommends
Dole Salad Kits
I love these kits. My personal favorites are the Southwest Salad and the Hearty Italian Kit. They give you more dressing than you need but the flavors are phenomenal and can be a good addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Condition of the Month – Running Injuries
Through our Pain-Free& Efficient Running Workshops, we hope to reduce injuries in area runners. Our next workshop is scheduled for April 26. However, if one of these injuries does develop, we are thrilled to share that we have the gold-standard treatment to address them, Active Release Techniques (ART).
Read a Runner’s World article about ART here.
View the elite athletes who have experienced results with our care at compasschiro.com in the Team Compass Chiropractic page.
A thorough exam determines problem muscles, joints, and nerves in the painful region. Video analysis of gait is often performed. Stabilizing and healing an injured leg condition often includes Active Release Techniques treatment to free up the tight muscles or scar tissue. Rehabilitative exercises and stretches, running gait modification, and chiropractic care may also be recommended. Call our office at 515.309.1217 to schedule a complementary consultation or new patient visit.
